How to Choose Your Coffee Grind by Brew Method

Grind Size Changes Everything

The beans are only half the story. Grind size determines how fast water moves through your coffee, which controls extraction — the balance of flavor pulled from the grounds. Too coarse and your cup tastes thin and sour. Too fine and it turns bitter and over-extracted. Match the grind to your brewer, and everything else falls into place.

At ZenBellies, every coffee we roast is available in your chosen grind — from Extra Coarse all the way down to Fine — so you can order exactly what your setup needs.

The Brewer-to-Grind Table

Brewer Grind Size What to Look For
French Press Coarse Chunky, like coarse sea salt. Keeps grounds out of your cup.
Chemex Medium Coarse Slightly finer than French Press. The thick Chemex filter needs the extra surface area.
Drip Machine (auto) Medium The universal setting. Think table salt texture.
Pour Over (V60, Kalita) Medium Fine A touch finer than drip for a cleaner, more controlled brew.
AeroPress Medium to Fine Flexible by design — medium for a longer steep, fine for a quicker espresso-style shot.
Moka Pot Fine Close to espresso. Pressurized brewing needs fine grounds for proper resistance.
Cold Brew Extra Coarse Long steep time (12–24 hrs) means coarser is better — prevents bitterness.

Already Using Pre-Ground Coffee?

Pre-ground works beautifully when you order to match your brewer. The key is freshness — pre-ground coffee oxidizes faster than whole bean, so we roast and grind your order on demand. If you brew with a drip machine most days and occasionally use an AeroPress, we'd recommend ordering Medium for drip and keeping a small bag of Medium Fine on hand for AeroPress sessions.

How to Adjust for Taste

Grind charts are your starting point, not a hard rule. Use this as your quick dial:

  • Cup tastes sour, weak, or under-developed? Go one step finer. You need more extraction.
  • Cup tastes bitter, harsh, or dry? Go one step coarser. You're over-extracting.
  • Cup tastes balanced, sweet, and smooth? You found your grind. Stick with it.

Small changes make a big difference. One grind step at a time is all it takes.
